The Lodge at Big Falls

This family run lodge on the banks of the Rio Grande in southern Belize has nine cottage style cabanas looking down on the Rio Grande river that winds around the property. Cabanas are set in a tropical garden surrounded by the river and forest. The Lodge has a full service restaurant and bar, gift shop and guest library and resource centre. Our cuisine includes fresh local fruit and vegetables and fish and seafood from Punta Gorda market nearby and caters to all dietary preferences. All staff are English-speaking Kek’chi Maya from Big Falls village. The lodge is conveniently situated in the heart of Toledo and gives easy access to all Toledo’s attractions from Blue Creek in the south to Monkey River in the north. Big Falls itself is home to the two households comprising The Living Maya Experience that offer guests the opportunity to learn about Kek’chi Maya crafts, culture and cuisine. The village offers the only zip line in Toledo just ten minutes walk from the lodge. Guests can float on the river in inner tubes for half a mile and lounge in the warm pool fed from a hot spring on the hillside above. The lodge is also a licensed tour operator and runs its own trips to Mayan archaeological sites, waterfalls in national parks and kayaking on the Rio Grande. Guests can go cave swimming at Blue Creek, visit local organic cacao farmers and chocolate makers and try their hand at Garifuna and Creole drumming at the two schools in the area. The lodge has particular expertise in birding and Steven Choco is a highly skilled and experienced birding guide who is also a member of the Belize Bird Records Committee.
